| Room History: |
Mr. Ralph Lashells was a native
of Mercer County, New Jersey who served during the Revolution
fighting in several major battles including Germantown and
Monmouth Court House. He moved to Gettysburg, operated a
tavern in 1789 and eleven years later served as Adams County's
first sheriff. In 1808 he initiated the first stage line
to Gettysburg. In the spring of 1816, he moved his subject
business to this property.
In the December 20, 1820 Sentinel this ad was published,
"Indian King Inn and Stage Office - Having leased
the well known Establishment in West York Street, a short
distance west of the Court House in the borough of Gettysburg,
lately kept by Mr. Ralph Lashells, as public house. Begs
leave to inform his friends and the public in general
that he is prepared and will use every exertion in his
power, to entertain them in the comfortable and genteel
style. The principle part of the furniture and particularly
the beds and bedding, are new, and of the first quality.
As this is an important object with Ladies and Gentlemen
traveling, it has been particularly attended to. In providing
for his Table, and selecting the best liquors for his
bar (of which, from his long experience, he considers
himself a competent judge) the greatest attention will
always be paid. His stabling, is new and in good order.
Sober and attentive Hostlers, and a supply of corn, oats,
and hay of the best in the country can afford, will always
be kept, and the strictest attention paid to this department,
so the Gentlemen wishing to take the stage, may rest assured
of having their horses well taken care of, and on reasonable
terms. Also in the store adjoining the above, a selection
of groceries."
